Pierre Boutquin

Built by an engineer, not a marketer

The risk machinery banks use, rebuilt for you.

ETFWealthIQ’s portfolios were built by Pierre Boutquin — a systems engineer who spent 25+ years building the risk, rates, and pricing systems inside two of the largest banks in Canada, working inside their Treasuries. The whole site answers one question: how a bank Treasury would build your ETF portfolio.

The seat

25 years inside bank Treasuries.

For more than two decades, Pierre sat inside bank Treasuries, building the systems that measured and hedged risk on multi-billion-dollar books. At TD, he directed 20+ mission-critical market-and-retail rates systems and built the system measuring the risk of a portfolio of equity-linked GICs and its hedges — roughly $30 billion in notional value. His team was the only one in the bank to ship a stable, Dodd-Frank- and EMIR-compliant trading system by the deadline, every phase. Earlier, at CIBC, he led the design of all market-risk measurement systems used internally by the bank’s Treasury and built the tools for pricing complex options for its trading team.

When a Treasury hedges a $30B equity-linked liability, it doesn’t guess. It measures covariance, stress-tests drawdowns, and validates out-of-sample. That discipline — not a market opinion — is the seat this whole project grew out of.

The realization

The DIY investor has none of that machinery.

The tools a bank Treasury takes for granted — covariance estimation, tail hedging, drawdown control, walk-forward validation — simply aren’t available to the person managing their own ETFs. What they get instead is a fixed-weight model from a blog, a black-box robo-advisor, or 1–2% AUM advice that is really a model portfolio in disguise. None of those show their work, and none of them were built with the rigor a multi-billion-dollar hedge book demands.

The synthesis

So he rebuilt the institutional toolkit — in the open.

Pierre rebuilt that institutional toolkit — construction models, covariance estimators, Monte Carlo, walk-forward, attribution — as an open-source engine: Boutquin.Trading, released under the MIT License. He then used it to construct backtested model portfolios any DIY investor can implement in about an hour. The named mechanisms across ETFWealthIQ aren’t marketing language; each is a thin wrapper around an auditable algorithm in that public engine.

The proof

Don’t take his word for it. Audit the math.

The engine is public. Inspect it, run it, or fork it. The portfolios are built with the same risk discipline a bank Treasury runs — that’s the whole point, and the open source is how you can verify it rather than simply believe it. For a research-oriented, skeptical investor, an algorithm you can read and execute yourself is a higher form of proof than any claim a marketer could make.

Why open source

Transparency is the only credential that can’t be faked.

This audience — informed, self-directed, skeptical — has heard every claim. What it rarely gets is the source code behind the claim. Open-sourcing the engine isn’t generosity; it’s the most honest proof available. The construction models and validators are academic algorithms published in textbooks, so hiding them would prove nothing. Publishing them proves they were implemented correctly. The curation — which ETFs, in what proportions — is the work; the math is yours to check.

Education, not advice

Pierre is a systems engineer and quant-systems builder — not a registered investment adviser, portfolio manager, or financial planner. ETFWealthIQ is an educational publisher. The Blueprints are illustrative model portfolios presented for educational purposes, never personalized recommendations. The message has always been “I built the machinery, and you can inspect it” — never “trust me with your money.”
